Betty Livingstone Obituary

Betty J. Livingstone, age 91, of De Smet, SD, passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in De Smet, SD.

Betty will be buried next to her husband at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, CA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.com), an organization Betty was very happy to support.

Betty June Livingstone was born in Los Angeles, CA, on May 2, 1932 to Clara (Strand) and Frank Anderson.  She died on January 27, 2024 at the Good Samaritan in De Smet, SD.

Betty married William Bain Livingstone on January 29, 1966.  (Bill was the nephew of Henry (Florence) Kruger of De Smet.)  They settled in Downey, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles, where they raised two daughters, Sharon and Susan, in a home at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac.

Betty was a member of the American Lutheran Church in De Smet.  Prior to moving here, she played an active role in the congregation of Christ Lutheran Church in Downey, CA, where she served on a variety of committees.  While her daughters were growing up, she volunteered at their schools, was involved in their Girl Scout Troops’ activities, and enrolled them in many classes at their local YMCA.

Nearly every summer, Betty and Bill would pack up the family van and hit the road with their girls, stopping at every antique shop, fort, and historical marker along the way.  They’d spend time visiting Bill’s family in De Smet and often made their way to see Betty’s uncle and aunt on their farm near Blair, WI.

Betty and Bill enjoyed taking day trips to museums, libraries, historic sites, shops, festivals, and other events throughout Southern California.  They shared a love for history, genealogy, antiques, good Mexican food, and hopping in their car to see where the road would lead them next.

After Bill passed away in 2011, Betty relocated to De Smet in 2015 to be near a daughter and son-in-law.  She became one of the first residents of The Village Assisted Living in De Smet in 2019.  Her last months were spent at the Good Samaritan.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Sharon (Darrin) Edwards of Kingman, AZ, and Susan (Eric) Eastin of De Smet.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William Bain Livingstone, her parents, Clara (Strand) and Frank Anderson, and her sister, Barbara Lee Anderson, who died as a child at the age of eight.
