Carol Mary (Skells) Matthes peacefully passed away on Friday, November 13, 2020.
Carol was born on December 25, 1937. She married Orval Matthes on October 2, 1959 in Mitchell, South Dakota, where the couple lived and raised their family for many years. Carol taught elementary school in Mitchell for several years and continued to substitute teach while her children were young. She enjoyed being with her family, gardening, playing cards, and bowling. Carol is remembered as a loving, patient, and kind wife, mother, grandmother, sister, niece, cousin, and friend. She saw the best in everyone and always trusted God's plans. She treasured her grandchildren and embraced every moment with them. Carol is survived by her husband Orval Matthes, her daughter Susan Kobat, her son Robert (Niki) Matthes, her sisters Patricia (Harlan) Bach and Janette (Brian) Stubson; grandchildren Lucas (Tiffany) Kobat, Kayla Kobat, Cassandra and Grace Matthes and great grandchildren Ariah and Brooks Kobat. All of these she loved and touched deeply. She is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Evelyn Skells and her sister Ruth Steichen. Family and friends are invited to attend a walk through visitation on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown, South Dakota. Funeral
Services will be held immediately after at 2:00 p.m. following the visitation. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown, South Dakota. Honorary pallbearers will be Lucas Kobat, Richard Schaack, Harlan Bach, Brian Bach, Brian Stubson, and Andrew Stubson . In lieu of flowers, the family has set up a Go Fund Me page where funds will be utilized for the staff and residents of Wrage Village at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, South Dakota, where Carol spent the last couple years of her journey.
