Charles "Chuck" O. Jones, 83 of Lake Preston died Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in DeSmet, SD.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in DeSmet with FR. Gregg Frankman celebrant. Burial will be in the Lake Preston Cemetery at Lake Preston. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Friday, June 29, 2012 at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Chapel in Lake Preston and before services in the church on Saturday.
Charles "Chuck" O. Jones was born September 14, 1928 to Arden and Ruth (Blanchford) Jones at rural St. Lawrence in Hand Co. SD. He attended school at St. Lawrence. Chuck enlisted in the US Army on September 28, 1946 and was stationed in Korea and discharged in the spring of 1948. He married Vivian Lakner on November 4, 1948 at the Catholic Church in Wessington, SD. The couple farmed in the Wessington area. In June of 1962 they moved to Lake Preston where he was employed as a butcher at Larsen's Meat Market. In 1973 he bought Streeter's Grocery and ran Chuck's Grocery until 1993. Because of health reasons he retired and sold the store to his son, Roger and is wife Barbara.
Chuck was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, Lake Preston Fire Dept and Ambulance and the Lake Preston American Legion Post.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and sports. Chuck enjoyed the holidays, especially Christmas Day surrounded by his extended family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was known as a story teller that might just stretch the story a little. Chuck was a man with quick wit and many catchy phrases.
He is survived by his wife Vivian of Lake Preston, three sons, Art (Brenda) of Garretson, SD, Arden (Debra) of Hartford, SD, Roger (Barb) of Lake Preston, SD, a daughter Gayle (Tom) Birath of Marshall, MN, 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a sister Elsie (Jim) Hancock of Ree Heights, SD.
He is preceded in death by parents, and an infant daughter.
