Charmaine Bohn Obituary

Charmaine H. Bohn, age 88, of De Smet, SD, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at Grand Living at Lake Lorraine in Sioux Falls, SD.  Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the American Lutheran Church in De Smet, SD.  Rev. Jonathan Dolan will officiate. Music will be provided by Mary Weerts as organist with Tristin Gruenhagen as vocalist.  The funeral service will be live-streamed on our website. 

Visitation will take place on Friday at the church prior to the services beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Burial will be at the De Smet Cemetery in De Smet, SD.  Pallbearers will be Charmaine’s grandchildren: Taylor Klinkel, Michaela Evans, Kortney Klinkel, Geoff Bohn, Jeremy Olson and Ryan Olson.

Charmaine was born in rural Webster, SD, to Erich and Bena (Dirks) Waller on August 27, 1934. She attended Webster High School where she met Don. She was a Girls State representative her junior year and graduated in 1951. After graduation she attended South Dakota State University.

On October 18, 1953, Charmaine and Don Bohn were united in marriage and continued living in Brookings, SD. The young couple returned to Webster for a short time before moving to De Smet, SD. They later moved to Britton, SD and Plankinton, SD before moving back to De Smet. Charmaine worked for a short time as a cook and later took a job at Ward’s Department Store where she worked for many years.

Charmaine was a longtime, active member of American Lutheran Church and also served as chairman of the board of the De Smet Depot Museum. Charmaine enjoyed sewing, collecting recipes and having coffee with friends. She was an avid reader and shopper and loved spending time with her family. 

She is survived by her husband, Don Bohn of Sioux Falls, SD; children: Randy (LaVonne) Bohn of De Smet, SD, and Danita (Mike) Klinkel of Spearfish, SD; sister, Wanda (Arnold) Helland of Billings, MT; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Erich and Bena Waller; son, Doug Bohn; and sister, Velda Myers.
