Doreen Johnson Obituary

Doreen J. Johnson, age 93, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2020, at the local hospital. She was the widow of Alvin F. Johnson. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown.

Rev. Kent Stillson will officiate. Music will be provided by A.J. Sherrill as organist with Jonalyn Johnson as soloist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Thursday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.

Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. and also prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Burial will be at Egeland Cemetery, rural Waubay, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike and Sarah Thury and Doreen's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Active pallbearers are: David Hamman, Daniel Hamman, Brandon Hamman, Nicholas Hamman, Andy Johnson, Todd Schmahl and Thomas Schmahl.



Doreen was born on June 17, 1926, at home to Elmer and Hilma (Swanson) Richardt. She grew up on the farm and attended country school in Ortley Township for 8 years. She then attended Waubay High School and graduated in 1944. In 1945, she married Alvin F. Johnson at Atlo Township Church in Ortley. They farmed in Waubay, SD area until 1997 when they moved to Watertown, SD. She was baptized and confirmed as an adult in 1947 and became a member of Egeland Lutheran Church. She became a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer after moving to Watertown. She held many positions in the church, including Sunday school teacher, WELCA (Ladies Aid) and church circles. She was also a member of the 4-H, Extension Club and the Birthday Club. She was a foster grandparent at McKinley School until 2012.

She also worked in Waubay, Webster and Watertown.

Her special times were spent with her family, friends and on the farm. She loved working on the dairy farm and in the fields. She loved the outdoors, camping and fishing. Her hobbies included making afghans, doilies, crocheting and baking. She made a baby afghan for all of her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.

Doreen is survived by her children:

Carol (Rodney) Rau, of Watertown, SD, Diane (Roger) Hamman, of Fairmont, ND, Lee (Sheila) Johnson of Watertown, SD and Denise Schmahl (Bryon Gaikowski) of Watertown, SD; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and one sister-in-law Joan (Gene) Warriner of Blunt, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; her son, Alan; one granddaughter, Amy Hamman; one great grandson, Kendall Compton; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
