Dorothy Smith Obituary

Dorothy Alaine Fisher Smith passed away on August 25, 2020, at the Jenkins Living Center in Watertown, SD, at the age of 96.

She was born on July 3, 1924 to Dorothy (Elford) Fisher and Charles Fisher in Bebee, South Dakota. Memorial services will be Friday, September 4, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Mobridge, SD. After graduating she obtained her teaching certificate and taught school for a short time.

In 1945 she became Deputy Treasurer of Edmunds County and worked at the Court House in Ipswich.

It was there she met her future husband (Lewis Smith) who was then beginning his career with the State of South Dakota as a Game Warden.

They were married on July 12, 1947 and began their married life in Ipswich.

On May 5, 1952 their daughter Kyle Lynne was born (true to SD they had to follow a snow plow to get from Ipswich to the hospital in Eureka).

Lewis accepted a position in Mobridge, SD and in 1957 Scott David was born in Mobridge.

Mom was a terrific seamstress and spent hours sewing for the family and sometimes for others at their request.

Dorothy was a caring stay at home mother, making sure she was home every day to prepare lunch when we came home from school over the lunch hour and excellent meals in the evening.

She was a great cook - especially her potato salad.

After sewing for years she took up cross stitch and like everything else she did it was perfect. Mom also enjoyed working on the election board and did so for many years.

She was also our Church Secretary for 25 years. In their spare time Mom and Dad loved to hunt prairie dogs, turkeys and fishing.

(Dad said that Mom could shoot the head off a turkey at 200 yards - he was so very proud of her shooting prowess.) They spent memorable times together doing what they really enjoyed - being out in the country together. Mom was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, Mobridge, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lewis in September of 2008, her son Scott and his wife Apryl, her sisters Mavis Faeth of Sacramento, CA and Arland Larsen of Cody, WY.

She is survived by her daughter, Kyle (Art) Shelton of White Pine, TN; her grandchildren Andrea (John) Faunce, of Marshall, NC,

Aryel Smith of Sioux Falls, SD and Jordan Smith of Hector, SD; great-grandson David Lewis (Lewie) Faunce of Marshall, NC and very special friends, LeRoy and Linda Brandenburger.

We thank Mom's nurses and caregivers while she was a resident at Jenkins Living Center.
