Elaine Nelson Obituary
Elaine L. Nelson, age 91, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at a local care center.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown.
Rev. Paul Janke will officiate.
Music will be provided by Barb Hartley as organist.
Service will be livestreamed via the St. Martin's Lutheran Church website as well as the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel Facebook page.
Facemasks are highly encouraged.
The family is requested to meet at the church on Tuesday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service. Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday, March 22, 2021, from 5-7 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Burial will be at the Lorinda Cemetery in Henry, SD.
Pallbearers will be: Kurt Gassman, Ricky Nelson, Arlen Boehnke, Kevin Chandler, Marty Higgins, Alan Nelson, Justin Brehmer and Payton Gassman. Elaine was born on January 30, 1930, in Watertown, SD, to Ray and Dena (Gronewold) Chandler.
She attended school in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School in 1944. Elaine worked at Quadee/Minnesota Rubber where she was a long-time employee until her retirement. On April 1, 1949, Elaine married Lloyd Nelson at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown.
She assisted Lloyd with many jobs on the family farm.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Henry, SD, and later St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD.
She enjoyed gardening and was very talented making many quilts and crocheting.
Elaine was an exceptional seamstress, making a variety of items including afghans and clothing.
Although she didn't have any children of her own, Elaine formed close bonds with many people that cared for her as a mother and grandmother. She adored time with these individuals as well as her family and friends. Blessed to share in Elaine's life are Kurt and Dory Gassman of Henry, SD; those grateful to call her "Grandma" are Natasha (Justin) Brehmer of Parker, SD, Shantel Gassman of Columbus, MO, and Kendra Gassman and Payton Gassman of Henry, SD; and her "great-granddaughter" Ellie Joy Brehmer of Parker, SD. Elaine is survived by her sisters-in-law: Edna Schooley of Aurora, CO, and Sylvia (LaVern) Zamow of Watertown, SD, and Inez Chandler of Watertown, SD; and 30 nieces and nephews.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents, Ray and Dena; her brother, Kenneth Chandler; three brothers-in-law, Marvin (Dorothy) Nelson along with Marvin's second wife, Mildred, Frank (Ruby) Nelson and Richard (Betty) Nelson; three sisters-in-law, Alice (Arnold) Hogstad, Elsie (Dan) Hestand and Marjorie Nelson; and seven nieces and nephews.
