Ella C. Weerts, age 92, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2021, at the De Smet Good Samaritan Society. Private family funeral service and visitation will be held 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 13, 2021, at the American Lutheran Church in De Smet, SD. The service will also be available via Facebook live on the American Lutheran Church page and the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel page. Private family burial at the Le Seuer Cemetery, Bancroft, SD. Face masks are required. Ella Clara Marie (Behm) Weerts, 92, of Bancroft, South Dakota, passed away on February 4, 2021.
She was born September 30, 1928 in Madison, SD to Frieda (Wulff) and Arthur Behm. Ella grew up on the family farm by Canova, SD.
She attended Pearl #1 Country School through 8 th grade and graduated from Canova High School in 1946.
During the school year, Ella lived in town and worked at Ray's Grocery Store.
After graduation, Ella worked full time at Ray's Grocery Store.
Later, she moved to Mitchell, SD and worked as a bookkeeper for Armours. She married Elmer Donald Weerts on June 4, 1950 at Immanuel Lutheran, Canova, SD where she had been baptized and confirmed.
They made their home on the Weerts family farm north of Bancroft where they raised their five children.
She was the bookkeeper for E. Weerts, Inc. for over 50 years. Ella was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Bancroft, SD, where she was organist for over 30 years, taught Sunday School and was active in WELCA, serving as treasurer, secretary and president.
She also served as secretary and treasurer for the church. Ella was active in the community as a member of the Friendly Farmerettes Extension Club and a 4-H Leader.
She enjoyed baking cookies, gardening, decorating cakes, playing Scrabble, doing crossword puzzles (in pen), raising chickens, sewing, drawing, and playing piano. Ella was a kind soul who loved her family and her church.
She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Ella is survived by four children, Eugene (Mary) Weerts of Bancroft, SD, Eunice (Kent) Kapplinger of Fargo, ND, Erland (Marlys) Weerts of Bancroft, SD, and Evelyn (Richard) Cottam of High Point, NC; son-in-law, Delmer Wolkow of De Smet, SD; sister-in-law, Bernice Mundhenke of De Smet, SD; 13 grandchildren, Mathew (Betty) Wolkow of Lewisville, TX, Michael (Lori) Wolkow of
Courtland, MN, Nolan (Leah) Wolkow of Alexandria, MN, Lisa (Dane) Slater of Olympia, WA, Laura (Justin) Ruesch of Watertown, SD, Steven (Caitlin) Weerts of Bancroft, SD, Eric Weerts of Elko New Market, MN, Erin (Joseph) Stewart of Huron, SD, Evan (Meghan) Weerts of Big Lake, MN, Sam (Kalley) Hogstad of Brookings, SD, Corey (Nancy) Luckow of San Clemente, CA, Katherine Cottam and Caroline Cottam of High Point, NC; and 28 great-grandchildren, Whitney (Kevin) Lambert, Logan Wolkow, Matalyn Wolkow, Elizabeth Wolkow, Nathan Wolkow, Jonathon Wolkow, Brady Wolkow, Jaymeson Wolkow, Colby Wokow, Isabella Wolkow, Heidi Petersen, Aiden Petersen, Johnathan Slater, Crosby Ruesch, Chloe Ruesch, Addison Weerts, Nora Weerts, Parker Weerts, Elliot Weerts, Jade Stewart, Faith Stewart, Emeri Stewart, Joseph Stewart Jr., Kinsley Weerts, Braden Hogstad, Luke Luckow, Paul Luckow, and John Luckow. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer, daughter Eileen Wolkow, brother Gilbert (Elfrieda) Behm, sister Sylvia (Leslie) McCune and great-granddaughter Emma Jean Weerts. A private family service will be held on February 13, 2021 with burial to follow at LeSuer Cemetery at Bancroft, SD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ella's name can be made to Avera Hospice of Mitchell or Good Samaritan Center in De Smet.
