Elmer Compaan, age 93, of Watertown, SD, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, surrounded by his family, after an illness with prostate cancer. Private family funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 9, 2020, at the First Baptist Church in Watertown, SD. Jim Shroll will officiate. Music will be provided by Eloise Falk as organist, and Hannah Hillesland as soloist. Family is requested to meet at the church on Monday by 12:30 for a prayer service. The service will be Live-Streamed via Facebook and our You Tube page.
Public visitation will be at the church on Monday, prior to the service, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Face coverings are required.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Elmer's great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be: Erica Coughlin, Aberdeen, SD, Lisa Goette, Aberdeen, SD, Kylie Inlow, Naperville, IL, Kassie VanMeveren, Brookings, SD, Gavn Hartmann, Watertown, SD, Katie Zacharias, Hartford, SD, Cassi Hagen, Davenport, IA, and Cole Crittenden, Sioux Falls, SD.
Elmer was born on November 18, 1926, to Pieter and Katie (Bouma) Compaan, in Westfield, ND. He met Edna Kist while roller skating on January 1, 1949. They married in Linton, ND. The couple moved to a farm at Westfield, ND, and lived there for 10 years raising their three children. In 1959, they moved to Mobridge, SD, where Elmer worked at Peavey Lumber for 13 years before moving to Watertown, SD. Elmer also worked at Peavey Lumber there. He also did remodeling jobs with Jay Sutton and Wendell Lunde.
Elmer was a member of First Baptist Church in Watertown. He served on the Diaconate Board for many years, and also taught Sunday school. He enjoyed his cats, square dancing, his garden, church events, the game of Scrabble and building things.
He is survived by his children, Delmer (Susan) Compaan, Webster, SD, Kevin (Jony) Compaan, Watertown, SD and Libby (Gary) Crittenden, Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
