Fern Smith Obituary
Fern Pearl Smith passed away on June 18, 2020, at the age of 93. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel. Pastor Gerald Volk will officiate. Music will be provided by Nancy Maynard as pianist.
The service will be Live-Streamed. The family is requested to meet at the chapel by 10:30 a.m. for a family prayer service. Visitation will be on Tuesday at the chapel, prior to the service, starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be Fern's grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and very special friend, Barbara Maynard. Active pallbearers are: Aaron Even, Nathan Ramse, A.J. Willett, Jason Jungers, John Maynard and Paul Ramse. Fern was born on February 23, 1927, to Lamont and Hazel (Banker) Lippert, in Huron, SD. She attended school in Huron and graduated from Huron High School. On June 6, 1945, Fern married Robert Leroy Smith. In 1953 they moved to Brazil to become missionaries. They were missionaries in Brazil for 30 years, starting in the northern part of Brazil - Macapa, Amapa. They spent a period of time in Belem, Para and then in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Fern was a member of Watertown Christian Church. Fern is survived by two daughters, Susan Pereira of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil and Janet (Don) Schmitt of Redmond, Washington; one son, David (Vicky) Smith of Watertown, SD; her daughter-in-law, Lorinda Smith of Huron, SD; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her son, Steve; her son-in-law, Antonio Pereira; her sisters, June Helseth, Joyce Newland, Dorothy Lippert, Beatrice Reilly, Irene Barnes and Margaret Humphrey ; and her brothers, Donald, Raymond, Charles and Frederick Lippert.
