Jan Schull Obituary

Janice “Jan” Eileen Schull, 65, of Watertown, SD, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother went to be with the Lord peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Saturday, September 18, 2021, in Parker, CO.

Jan was born on April 12, 1956, to William and Geraldine (Schauermann) Midcap in Fort Morgan, CO. She grew up on the family farm with her sister Lynda, brother William “Bill”, and twin sister Jenese. She enjoyed riding her horse named Tonda, showing her 4-H steer, and playing with Tony the lamb - for a short time. In high school she was involved in pom pom girls, spirit club, band (saxophone), 4-H, Future Business Leaders of America, voted Miss Pacemaker, and a member of the homecoming royalty.

She received her associates degree in 1977 from Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, CO, where she met her future husband, Lee Schull. She enjoyed being a “little sister” to Farmhouse Fraternity while at CSU. After graduation, she moved to Watertown, SD to be closer to Lee.

Lee and Jan were married on September 8, 1979, in Fort Morgan. As they started their life together, her first job in Watertown was waitressing at The Other Place Cafe. She then was employed as an administrative assistant to Marty Raml Real Estate. This was all before beginning her true lifelong passion - being a mom! She and Lee have been blessed with four children: Kyle, Katie, Kari, and Collin. She fiercely supported her children in all their activities of sports, dance recitals, pageants, performances, music recitals, and academics.

As the daughter, granddaughter, and cousin of Marines, Jan became a proud military mom when Kyle attended the United States Naval Academy, and then accepted his commission as a Marine. This deeply inspired her to serve those who serve our country. She always found a way to honor those in the military by asking to hear their stories, offering hugs, buying meals, and many other simple acts of “thank you for your service.”

Jan’s fingerprint has been left all across the community. She volunteered her time and energy with the church youth group, school library, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and multiple mentoring programs. She was proudly elected to the Watertown School Board, and also served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club and Lake Area Technical College Foundation. She had recently found yet another avenue for assisting her community as a health coach. Dozens of people were able to improve their health through her passionate coaching and encouragement.

Jan loved being a “second mom” to countless people in the community. Whether it was hosting at her house, visiting in person, or a simple text to those in her thoughts, it was never a question if Jan would show up. She also enjoyed boating on Lake Kampeska, spending time at the lake house, gardening, decorating for holidays, interior design, and traveling.

Jan is preceded in death by her parents William and Geraldine Midcap, her in-laws Lester and Johanna (Saathoff) Schull, her niece Elizabeth “Beth” Wood, her sister-in-law Doreen (Schull) Feeney and her husband Doug, and her brother-in-law David Hilftery.

Jan is survived by her husband of 42 years, Lee, her children Kyle (Chelsea) Schull of Sioux Falls, SD, Kathryn “Katie” (David) Henry of Parker, CO, Kari (Kyle) Poehls of Watertown, SD, Collin Schull of Denver, CO, her grandchildren, sister Lynda Hilferty of Madrid, NE, brother Bill (Dana) Midcap of Santa Fe, NM, sister Jenese (Steve) Hankins of Fort Morgan, CO, and sister-in-law Nancy (Ed) Landes of Tucson, AZ.

We will be honoring her memory with a service on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 10:30 AM CT at St. Martin’s Church in Watertown, SD with Pastor Janke to officiate.  Music will be provided by Suzanne Steinmetz as organist.  Pallbearers will include Tony Jacobson, Ryan Brown, Travis Yanta, Brady Schenecker, Shane Hetland, and Jeremy Engebretson. Honorary pallbearers will include Travis Hopkins, Nate Midcap, Mark Feeney, Brian Feeney, and Matt Landes. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
