Jean Meier

Jean Marie Meier, 87, formerly of Perham, MN, passed away on January 21, 2023, at her home in Watertown, SD, after a short battle with cancer.

A private memorial service for Jean will be held in the summer of 2023. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown, SD.

Jean was born on July 2, 1935, to Eugene and Lois Wells. She was pretty unique because she attended four different high schools as she was growing up. Jean graduated from an ROTC school in Michigan, and on December 1, 1956, she was united in marriage to Alvin Meier. She became a lab tech and worked many afternoon and evening shifts while their three children were little. She retired after more than thirty years at Children’s Hospital in St. Paul. The family spent many weekends up at their Rush Lake cabin. In July, 1995, when she retired, Jean and Al settled into their cabin permanently, turning it into their primary home. She spent many years caring for her family and enjoying her kids and grandkids both at the lake as well as traveling to see them at their homes. In 2005, the resort next door got new owners. Only God knew that these neighbors would soon become family in both hers and Al’s hearts. In 2013, Jean moved to Watertown to be close to her daughter and her family. She loved to make them meals and watch them play in the backyard. She also took many trips to Florida and Minnesota to visit family. Jean particularly enjoyed driving her red truck, accompanied by her cousins, around the countryside just to see God’s beautiful creation. 

Grateful to having shared in her life are her sons, Joe Meier of St. Petersburg, FL, and Jerry (Michele) Meier, of Lakeville, MN. She will be missed by her grandchildren Sara, John (Londa), and Josh (Kaitlyn) Florey of Watertown, SD; Ben Meier, Jeff Meier, and Ali (Steven) Craig of Largo, FL; Emily Meier and Olivia Meier of Lakeville, MN; great-grandchildren Bryon, Ellie, Jace, Paisleigh, and Faith Florey, and Chloe Craig; daughter-in-law Deonne Meier of Largo, FL; son-in-law Michael Florey of Watertown, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Honorary family members are son, Rich (Trish) Mowery; daughter, Ember Mowery; and grandchildren Tristan, Gabby, Cory, Xander, and Grayson Mowery all of Fargo ND; and daughter Jeanne Quarstad of New Brighton, MN.

Preceding Jean in death were her parents, Eugene and Lois; her husband, Alvin; daughter Linda Florey; sister Lorna (Harold) Neuschwander; nephew Tim Neuschwander; and many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and cousins.
