Jerrold (Jerry) Hackbart, age 73, of Watertown, SD passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023, at Prairie Lakes Healthcare. Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown. Rev. Paul Kuckhahn will officiate. The memorial service will be live-streamed on our website.
Visitation will be held at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown with military graveside honors conducted by Codington County Post #17 of the American Legion, Watertown, Frank H. Adams Post #750 of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Watertown, and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #1054, Watertown. Active Urn bearers will be Jerry’s grandchildren, Ahlyia Adolphsen, Darron Adolphsen, Davin Adolphsen and Nicholas Adolphsen.
Jerry was born February 24, 1950, in Watertown, SD to William and Minnie Hackbart. Jerry attended Watertown schools and graduated in 1969. He attended Northern State College prior to enlisting in the United States Airforce. He was stationed overseas in Korea, and was honorably discharged from Travis Air Force Base, Fairchild, CA in 1976.
Jerry was a patrolman for the Watertown Police Department from 1976-1981. He was owner of the Canteen Bar for over 25 years where he made many long lasting friendships. Prior to retiring, because of health he worked at Prairie Lakes Healthcare.
Jerry was a member of St. Martins Lutheran Church. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America and VFW where he was Commander from 1989 – 1990. He was also a member of the American Racing Pigeon Union.
Jerry’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler, and he raced pigeons. He was a fanatic Vikings and Twins fans. He loved playing, cards especially pinochle.
He is survived by his daughter, Jodi Porath (Dave Flipse) of Watertown, SD; step children Eric (Linda) Adolphsen of Hazel, SD, Sandy Davidson, Lacey Shock and Brian Shock all of Pueblo, CO; his grandchildren Grant Porath, Watertown, SD, Ahlyia Adolphsen, Cape Coral, FL, Darron Adolphsen, Davin Adolphsen and Nicholas Adolphsen all of Hazel, SD, Jayla Davidson, Jaydon Davidson and Charlie Davidson, Patrick Shock, Daxton Shock, Jiles Shock all of Pueblo, CO; sister Shirley (Lloyd) Stemwedel of Watertown; and nephews and families Chris (Michelle) Jaci and Sami Stemwedel, Brandon, SD, Andy Stemwedel, Adam (Tina) Madi and Max Stemwedel, Marty (Shannon) Carter and Ty Stemwedel all of Watertown and his beloved and spoiled dog Cookie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
