Mildred "Millie" Irene Born, age 90, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at a local care center.
She was the widow of Donald Born.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown, SD.
Rev. Keith Petersen will officiate.
Music will be provided by Ellen Heisner as organist. The family is requested to meet at the church on Friday by 10:00 a.m. for a prayer service.
Visitation will be at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Thursday from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. and prior to services at the church on Friday.
Burial will be at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Grover, SD.
Active pallbearers will be Jim Gerberding, Jerald Gerberding, Mike Paulsen and Matt Kranz.
Millie was born on July 20, 1928, in Estelline, SD, to Albert and Freda (Schutte) Appel.
She attended high school in Hayti and started working at the Hayti Courthouse while still in high school. Millie was the first ever to work at the courthouse while still in high school.
On October 6, 1946, Millie married Donald Born. The couple lived and farmed near Hazel, SD for seven years until they moved to town and purchased and ran Born's Grocery in Hazel, SD for more than 35 years.
Millie was very active in the community and she held many titles which included: Finance Officer for the Hazel town board, Ladies Aid Officer, Extension Club, and Treasurer for several organizations. Millie also received the Volunteer of the Year award in Watertown, where she volunteered for several places including Prairie Lakes Hospital, GSI Thrift Store, Senior Citizens and the Volunteer Center. She also enjoyed making and decorating cakes for area residents.
Millie is survived by one son, Terry (Carol) Born of Minneapolis, MN; one daughter, Deanna (Mick) Stanton of Watertown, SD; two grandchildren, Shelly (Darin) Dvorak of Plymouth, MN and Travis (Dave) Stanton of Rochester, MN; two great-grandchildren, Sean and Ashlyn Dvorak of Plymouth, MN; two sisters, Darlene Tillma of Castlewood, SD and Doll Wilson of Salina, OK; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Appel of Brookings, SD and Shirley Born of Watertown, SD.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Born, parents Albert and Freda Appel; one brother, Harold Appel; and two sisters, Jennie Stormo and Carole Cook.
