Mildred Johnson

Mildred Johnson age 92 of Watertown, SD, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2023, at her residence.  Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am, Friday, September 15, 2023, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.  Fr. John Fischer will be the celebrant. Music will be provided by Jane Rokusek and Becky Lubbers as song leaders.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Scripture Wake Service, Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel in Watertown. 

Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Watertown.  Active pallbearers will be Christopher Benshoof, Mason Kundert, Sean Zafft, Landon Benshoof, Mike Zafft and Rob Kallenberger.

Mildred was born on February 20, 1931, near Canistota, SD, to George and Mary (Nettie) Mehlbrech.  Millie graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Salem, SD.

Mildred (Millie) was united in marriage to Warren J. Johnson on July 18, 1949.  They made their home in Salem, SD.  In 1953 they moved to Watertown where she began her career with Northwestern Bell Telephone and then retired in 1983.  Millie and Warren raised and bred Quarter and Paint horses for many years. They were active participants in the local and breed horse show circuits while the girls were in high school as well in later years. They enjoyed having their grandchildren around and spending time in the summer.

Mildred is survived by two daughters, Dianne (Mike) Zafft, Watertown, SD, Mary Lynn (Stu) Benshoof, Dell Rapids, SD; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Mildred is preceded in death by her husband Warren J. Johnson; her parents George and Mary Mehlbrech; four brothers and five sisters.
