Roberta Warkenthien Obituary

Roberta M. Warkenthien, age 86, of Willow Lake, SD, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2020, at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

She was the widow of Elver Warkenthien.

Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am, Saturday, August 1, 2020, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willow Lake, SD.

The funeral will be streamed via Facebook Live and Drive Up Services will be broadcast via FM Radio 107.5. Pastor Randy Bader will officiate. Music will be provided by Aris Schmidt as organist. Visitation will be Friday, July 31, 2020, from 5-7 pm at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willow Lake, SD.



Burial will be at Collins Cemetery in rural Willow Lake.

Pallbearers will be Austin Swanhorst, Kyle Swanhorst, Keagan Swanhorst, Laine Warkenthien, Jim Johnson, and Mike Schaeffer. Roberta Mae Johnson was born May 5, 1934, to Lloyd and Lydia (Haight) Johnson in Troy, SD.

She grew up in the Goodwin, SD area and graduated from Goodwin High School in 1953.

Following graduation, she worked at various jobs in Watertown, SD.

Roberta was united in marriage to Elver Warkenthien at the Congregational Church in Watertown on October 27, 1963.

They made their home on the Warkenthien family farm near Willow Lake, SD.

On August 12, 1964, their son, Kim Edward was welcomed to the family.

Roberta was a member of the WL Evangelical Lutheran Church as well as a member of the Ladies Aid for 55 years.

She was a homemaker/farm wife until moving into Willow Lake in 1996. Roberta enjoyed cooking, baking, and sharing her goodies with others.

She was especially proud of her Fostoria china collection and enjoyed hosting gatherings to use them. She was always looking for new pieces to add to her collection.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart.

Roberta took interest in their activities and their friends. She became known as Grandma Bert to many in Willow Lake. Roberta is survived by her son Kim and his wife Cindy of Willow Lake, SD; grandchildren, Austin (Nickollette) Swanhorst, Kyle Swanhorst, Keagan Swanhorst, and Rayanna Warkenthien all of Willow Lake, SD, Laryn Warkenthien of Aberdeen, SD; great-grandchildren Emmette and Royce Swanhorst; sister-in-law Barbara Warkenthien of Willow Lake, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elver; her parents; sisters Donna Johnson, Edith Ann Ball; father-in-law Raymond Warkenthien; mother-in-law Minnie Warkenthien.
