Ruby was born on April 15, 1921 in Driscoll, ND, to Alfred and Jennie (Kluksdahl) Hogstad. Ruby was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Driscoll. The family moved to a farm by Steele, ND in 1924, where she attended country school there. In 1934 the family moved to a farm near Hastings. Ruby graduated from Hastings High School in 1938.
