THE FAMILY REQUESTS THAT FACE MASKS ARE WORN FOR THE VISITATION AND SERVICE
Warren “Swede” K. Spanton, age 93, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2020, after a brief illness at the local hospital. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Fr. John Lantsberger and Fr. Denis Meier will be the celebrants. Music will be provided by Jane Jaspers as organist and Becky Lubbers as the song leader. The service will be Live-Streamed on our website and Facebook Live. The family is requested to meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. for a family prayer service.
The family requests that face masks be worn for the visitation and the church service.
Visitation will be at Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m with a 7:00 pm Scripture Wake Service and also prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Codington County Post # 17 of the American Legion, Watertown and the Military Funeral Honors Team of the SD Army National Guard. Swede was born July 22, 1927 to Mabel (Upton) and Edward Spanton in Marietta, MN. He grew up in Milbank, SD attending Milbank High School from 1942-1946 lettering in sports every year.
After high school he ventured out to California and then Seattle where he worked for Boeing Aircraft. In 1951 he was drafted into the Army for two years with the 109th Infantry in Germany attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he returned to Milbank where he met the love of his life, Betty Ewalt. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on July 23, 1953. He worked for the Milbank Herald Advance newspaper. In 1955 Swede & Betty moved to Watertown, SD and went to work for the Watertown Public Opinion newspaper until retiring in 1992.
Swede was a founding member of Holy Name of Jesus Church and actively participated as a Eucharistic Minister, Usher, and helped out in any way he could. A Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, he was involved with the many functions and events they organized, including weekly Bingo. He was also a lifelong member of the American Legion.
Always a sports enthusiast, he played in both golf and bowling leagues, making it into the Watertown Bowler’s Hall of Fame. He always enjoyed and supported the Watertown Arrows and, of course, his beloved Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
Swede’s life can be characterized by three words: Love, Loyalty and Laughter for family and friends. Swede was devoted to his family and a friend to many. His love and loyalty will always be cherished and his ability to make others laugh was unforgettable.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Watertown, SD; his four children: Greg (Frank) Spanton, Cathedral City, CA; Mike (Josie) Spanton, San Carlos, CA; Brent (Diana) Spanton, Pittsburgh, PA; and Lori (Jim) Waba, Watertown, SD; 7 grandchildren: Ashley (Nate) Blom, Zachary (Justine) Waba; Mike (Kate) Spanton; Brian (Samantha) Spanton; Joel, Vanessa & Vivi Ramirez; and 8 great-grandchildren: Hunter & Jackson Blom; Jameson & Jovie Waba; Scarlett Johnson; Steven, Aria and Noah Spanton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers: Owen & Robert Spanton and his sister, Gervaise Lee.
