Ingalls was born May 25, 1948, in Watertown, SD to George & Shirley (Everson) Ingalls and raised in Henry, SD, along with his five siblings.

Wayne attended school in the Henry Public School District, graduated from Lake Area Technical College-Building Trades and enlisted with United States Army in 1965, serving two tours in Vietnam.

While on active duty in Vietnam, Wayne was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles Paratrooper Division, specializing in air assault operations.

While serving his country, he was severely injured from enemy action and received the Combat Wounded Purple Heart award for his valiant service.

Wayne was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign War.

He was proud of his military service and respectfully displayed the American flag. Upon returning to the U.S., Wayne was honorably discharged from the United States Army, and united in marriage to Donna (Kettwig) Ingalls on February 19, 1972 at St. Henry's Catholic Church in Henry, SD.

Following their marriage, Wayne and Donna purchased a farm near Hazel, SD where they raised livestock, a big garden, and their family of four sons.

Wayne was employed by the United States Postal Service in Watertown for thirty years prior to his retirement in 2008.

Wayne loved the outdoors, taking meticulous care of his farm, driving his Corvette convertible, riding his Harley motorcycles, fixing anything mechanical, and spending time with his dear friend Lil.

After raising his family and retiring, Wayne enjoyed traveling, restoring old tractors, gardening, working on his Hazel gas station, and having morning coffee with the local Hazel Café family.

He had a passionate way of relating with children that made him that special uncle, grandfather, and neighbor to many.

Wayne took great pride in raising and being a father to his four sons, attesting to that being his greatest accomplishment. Grateful for having shared his life are his special friend, Lillian Schmidt of Sioux Falls, SD; his four sons, Dwayne (Emily) Ingalls of Baltic, SD, Warren Ingalls of Basking Ridge, NJ, Bryan (Kaylene) Ingalls of Sioux Falls, SD, David (Nicoelle) Ingalls of Minnetrista, MN; his sisters Judy (Darrell) Wangen of Rapid City, SD, Jeanne (late Richard) Lane of Watertown, SD, brother Steven (Teresa) Ingalls of Wheatland, WY and sister Ellen Ingalls of Fort Worth, TX; his nine grandchildren and his mother-in-law, Margaret (Lantgen) Kettwig.
